“Family Until the Pink Slip”: The Harsh Reality of Layoffs in the Age of AI and Corporate Rebranding

Startup layoffs in India

Mumbai, March 19, 2025
In boardrooms, they’re called “resource reallocations.” In HR emails, it’s “organizational restructuring.” But for thousands of employees caught in the crossfire of tech layoffs, it means just one thing: you’re out.

The latest storm in corporate India and beyond revolves around what many are calling the “layoff paradox”—companies boasting about culture, innovation, and “people-first” leadership, while silently handing out pink slips at scale. And the public? They’re not buying the narrative anymore.

When Culture Becomes a Corporate Script

A tweet from Complete Circle CIO Gurmeet Chadha has gone viral, calling out Amazon’s mass layoffs and their hollow slogans. “Employees are called families… sab drama!” he wrote, triggering a wave of online debate. His post hit a nerve because it said out loud what many feel: that corporate empathy is often a performance, not policy.

Amazon’s restructuring move—reportedly impacting over 14,000 middle managers—has been framed as a step toward efficiency, driven by AI tools and automation. But employees aren’t comforted. The promise of AI-powered growth now seems double-edged: more output, less headcount.

India vs. the U.S.: Two Systems, One Insecurity

The issue isn’t confined to tech giants. A startup founder recently sparked attention by comparing layoff culture in India and the U.S., highlighting the severe lack of job security, unemployment benefits, and safety nets in the Indian ecosystem.

“In the U.S., laid-off workers often have access to severance, unemployment benefits, and counseling,” the founder wrote. “In India, it’s a call, a letter, and good luck.” This harsh reality has resurfaced a burning question: Where does loyalty stand when business priorities shift?

The Rise of AI and the Fall of Human-Centric Workplaces

As AI and automation dominate boardroom discussions, more companies are replacing mid-level roles with technology—fueling what critics call “efficiency at the cost of empathy.”

This trend is sparking a larger ethical debate:

  • Should tech companies be allowed to preach inclusion and innovation while executing silent layoffs?
  • Can AI be truly “intelligent” if it brings human misery?
  • And perhaps most pressing: Is the modern workforce becoming disposable in the name of digital progress?

As the “Chief People Officers” and “People Experience Heads” draft glossy mission statements, the people they serve are being shown the door.

‘We’re a Family’ – Until It’s Time to Cut Costs

The phrase “we’re a family” has long been used in corporate culture to foster trust and teamwork. But employees are increasingly skeptical. “If this is a family, it’s a dysfunctional one,” said an ex-manager affected by the recent wave of layoffs.

With platforms like X and LinkedIn now flooded with real-time testimonials from laid-off workers, the narrative is changing. What was once whispered in cubicles is now trending online: Workplaces need to walk the talk, not just talk the talk.

How Employees Are Coping (and Fighting Back)

  • LinkedIn is the new battlefield: Jobless professionals are leveraging the platform not only for leads but also to expose toxic patterns.
  • Employee unions in tech: Once unthinkable, the idea is gaining traction in Indian startups.
  • Whistleblower posts: Anonymous employees are spilling the truth behind internal emails and sugar-coated exit letters.
  • Startups rethinking hiring: Founders are beginning to adopt leaner, more transparent hiring models, mindful of long-term sustainability.

The Bigger Question: What Comes After the Layoff Era?

The current wave of job cuts in tech and startups is not just an economic issue—it’s a social one. Beyond the loss of income, there’s a growing loss of trust, especially among younger workers who are now questioning the value of company loyalty.

As AI replaces humans in decision-making roles, and cost-cutting becomes a strategic pillar, companies will have to face a new kind of pressure—from their employees, from the media, and from the public.

In the long run, only one question will matter:
Can innovation coexist with compassion?
